Political is good. It attracts me to them, as does the fact that they are christians.

As far as I know, the music and the lyrics are made separately. So I imagine we would still have the same songs, just different lyrics. Basically it would be the same, since I don't care at all for lyrics.

Well, if U2 had not gone political, we would not have:
War (album) and everything that followed. Besides, its what everyone else was doing in the early 80s. The Who had It's Hard in 1982. The Rolling Stones' "Undercover of the Night" critisizes the problems in South America, released in 1983. I think U2 was influenced a lot by the Who (aren't they listed as one of their influences?). When one of your influences put something out, it really gets to you. It gets you thinking about what the message is. The message? There is no need for war.

It's okay if you like politics in your music. It's okay if you don't. I like some of both.

Rock music can be categorised in several ways. RHCP for example makes good music (in my humble opinion, I know not every will agree). Their lyrics suck and they don't play that well live. Than there's Coldplay: great music, not that good with lyrics and they rock live.
At the end of the tunnel, there's a light called U2. Awesome music, awesome lyrics and awesome live.
