Column: off the record..., vol. 8-319
@U2,

Matt McGee
Am I the only one who's completely impressed and loving the packaging on the
Boy, October, and War re-issues? Seriously, these
must be the most perfectly put together releases of U2's career. I know there
are typos; that's not what I mean. I mean the physical product, the heavy cardboard
boxes, the thick book holding the CDs and just the overall... weight
of each one. Love it.
Speaking of those re-issues, we've already given away one full set to Justin
L., a lucky @U2 reader who subscribes to our
Twitter feed and saw the contest announcement Sunday afternoon. There's
an open contest right now on one of our other social network homes, and there
are plenty more contests still to come over the next couple weeks.
A week or two ago, I walked into the family room and discovered my son and
daughter watching the Hannah Montana 3D movie. On TV. With the 3D glasses and
all.
Did you catch that?
A 3D movie. On my television.
Didn't Catherine Owens say that they wouldn't release U2 3D on DVD
until you could get the full 3D experience in your living room? As best I could
tell, my kids just got the full Hannah Montana 3D experience in our living room.
As it turns out, a fan recently posted this hot rumor in the U2.com
message boards:
Heard a wild rumour today on the radio that U2-3D is set for a Christmas
release on DVD and Blue-Ray apparently it will coincide with the tour dates
being announced.
Now isn't that interesting?
If you live in Dublin, here's a call for help from us to you. @U2 reader Shawn
D. suggested a new addition for our Guide
to U2's Dublin: the Presbyterian Church Hall in Howth. That's the venue
where The Hype said goodbye to Dick Evans and officially became U2. Only problem
is that we're not sure of the exact spot. Shawn shared two links with us: This
one has a small photo, and then the church's
web site has some non-specific directions. I've been staring at Google Maps
for a while and can't find anything with a red roof that looks similar to the
photo and matches the directions on the church's web site.
If you can help pinpoint it for us, we'd love to add this to the Dublin Guide!
USA Today has a profile
of Modernista, the agency that created U2's Best. Video. Ever. for "Window
in the Skies." They don't spend much time on the U2 video, but that's okay
-- we spent a lot of time on it in our interview
with Modernista co-founder Gary Koepke last year.
It's been a while since we've done a "How to Use @U2" thing, and
I know we have a lot of new readers since the last one. So, in order to help
you understand how @U2 news works, how to get the most from your time on atu2.com,
how to connect with us here and on social sites, and how to get in touch with
us, we've posted this guide: How
to Get the Most From @U2. Let me know if you have questions that aren't
answered in there and I'll try to answer them in my next OTR.
And finally ... several readers sent in this link, and it was also in our forum:
Check out 10-year-old Sungha
Jung playing an amazing acoustic version of "With or Without You."
W.O.W.
Until next time...
